Mempo face mask in the me no shita bō style, Edo period (1603 - 1868)
In the usual design with a removable nose piece, the surface in the sabiji style with a beautiful brown patina, the back of the mask varnished in vermilion red. With a powerful wick made of bearskin, unusual side rings, serving same as pins for fixing the helmet chin strap cord (kabutō no ō) to the mask. The three-piece tare throat protection is varnished black, with decorative mimi ito lacing on the side edge of the slats and the horizontal edge of the last part. A very nice element of the mask are the large, anatomically stylized ears (mimi) made in the uchidashi technique. This is a very nice kind of the face mask in very good condition, which is particularly interesting for the symmetrical lacing rings on the sides of the mask, the significant sharp chin and the shiwa wrinkles.
